Custom Luminaires / import options

I have a few suggestions related to luminaires in DIALux:

- I think many users would like to be able to model and import their own luminaires, especially for us North American users, where many manufacturers only provide ies files. And, even when we do have ULD files from manufacturers, sometimes they are far too detailed for good performance. I know it is possible to import the IES files, and I do this all the time, but without the chance to model geometry, the luminaires are limited to little boxes or cylinders, joints are unavailable, they are all surface mounted, etc. I imagine the luminaire creation feature would function like importing an object, but with an associated ies or lumdat file, and possibly a specific material for the luminous aperture, or the aperture could be taken from the IES file. This would really help DIALux expand its userbase to those of us in North America. It will also help with things like decorative lighting, which rarely, if ever, has a manufacturer-supplied ULD.

- The ability to rename and re-order the luminaires in the luminaire selection window would really help users find the luminaire they want. Often the names are something like "LHBV48-LED840K180LUNV-P67" - it's not so easy to parse.

- It would be nice to be able to use generic luminaires inside of DIALux. The idea is that when designing, you want to go from the general to the specific - first you decide what kinds of lighting strategy you follow, try out a few types of luminaires in different arrangements, and once everything works, then you pick the specific product. But DIALux currently makes you use very specific products right from the start, which takes up time, both in finding the luminaire, and in choosing one variant after another if we find that the output or distribution is not quite right. If we could adjust output and distribution right inside of DIALux, and save those presets, then we can do our design and then go out and identify products that more or less match the generic versions at the end of the process. The generic luminaires will also help deal with products that don't come with photometric files, like decorative lighting or residential grade lamps.

- Related to the point above, the LUMsearch website could accept a generic luminaire preset and search the database for products with a similar output and distribution. As it is now, LUMsearch always returns far too many results, and some manufacturers have dozens of very similar variants that you have to scroll through.

- The IFC plugin is a good first step but if any changes or updates are needed, there is no way to incrementally update parts of the model, which basically makes the IFC plugin only useful for defining the building shell, prior to adding any luminaries or calculation surfaces. The ideal would be if specific parts of the IFC model could be selected for import or update.

Regarding your first point:
IES and LDT files are only photometric files displayed in a rather simple geometric shape. Solely the luminaire manufacturers (who applied a DIALux license) have the opportunity to include pictures, description texts or a 3D realistic model of the luminaire by means of the in-house format of DIALux "ULD". The ULD file format is an internal DIALux format which our plugins use.

Depending on the license a manufacturer bought from DIAL he can have 3D models (3DS or SAT) or 3D basic elements (cube, prism, sphere) for the visualization of his luminaries. In case the manufacturer has the license for 3D models, not necessarily all luminaries have SAT files. As making SAT files is some work, the manufacturer sometimes use the complex models only for design luminaries.

While DIALux software is free to use manufacturers needs to buy a license to become a DIALux partner and to import their products into this software. We have standard and premium license.
Premium partners can for example design their DIALux plugin more individual and have the possibility to provide ULD files for download.

So, to sum up, it is not possible to create your own ULD file by yourself.

With regard to the other points, we will pass them on to our product owners. They will discuss these topics intensely and probably will add your issues to our improvement list for the upcoming evo versions.
